CentraCare is looking for an experienced Nurse Practitioner to join their team at the Coborn Cancer Center!

About the Position

The Nurse Practitioner in this role will work 72-80 hours each week and will see 12-14 patients each day. In this role you will utilize advanced assessment and physical examination skills to provide general physical/medical care and treatment to hematology and oncology patients ranging in age from 18 years old to old adult within the Coborn Cancer Center. Providers in the position must have:

  • Ability to address treatment related anaphylactic-like reactions;
  • Ability to perform bone marrow biopsies
  • Advanced critical thinking and ability to make quick medical decisions in an emergency;
  • Flexibility with schedule.;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including working closely with radiation oncology providers;
  • Knowledge to evaluate potential oncology/hematology needs with referring providers.
  • Skills to address symptom management concerns of patients including treatment related pain management, fertility concerns and emotional distress

The APRN role at Coborn Cancer Center is uniquely designed to support the Medical Oncologists. A few responsibilities include:

  • Facilitate survivorship programming, including symptom management, breast surveillance and post-treatment survivorship visits;
  • Support same day add-on patients experiencing adverse effects from their treatment or disease;
  • Complete history and physicals on patients needing to be admitted to hospital;
  • Perform in-person and virtual visits for our regional partners in oncology care;
  • Provide supervision to patient receiving treatment in the Infusion Center (both Oncology and non-Oncology).
  • Chemotherapy follow-up
  • Monitor completion of the survivorship visits once treatment in completed

About the Provider:

Previous experience in a Nurse Practitioner role is preferred. Oncology or specialty care experience preferred. Demonstrated competence in teaching, organization, leadership, communication and research. Orientation will be given to obtain desired entry-level competence in lieu of experience. New graduates will be considered with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience as an Oncology RN. The ideal provider will have:

  • Interest in caring for patients undergoing cancer treatment, end of life/palliative care and symptom management.
  • Confidence in self; compassion for oncology and passionate about nursing practice.
  • A desire to care for patients with complex medical conditions including having serious illness conversations with patients to establish goals of care;
  • Self-initiative and motivation are critical.
  • Ability to build relationships through strong communication skills with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of Evidenced Based Practice and Nursing Research. APRN’s are required to be involved with one EBP and research study every year.
  • Willingness to provide mentorship of nursing staff as an APRN. 80% of RN staff are nationally certified and have longevity.
  • Comfort with IV therapy; as this role includes supervision on the Infusion Center,
  • Enjoy continued learning and growth.

Nurse Practitioner Qualifications:

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Masters or Doctorate Degree in Nursing with formal training as a nurse practitioner in the same specialty area of practice in which they are certified. Physician Assistants with nursing background may be considered.

Special Requirements:

Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of MN required. Current licensure as an APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) in the State of Minnesota required.
